What is a GED?
A GED, the General Educational Development diploma, is considered equivalent to a high school diploma. It consists of four tests:
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Science
- Social Studies
If you’re hoping to get a better job or higher degree, the GED is recognized and accepted by nearly all U.S. colleges, employers, and universities. Passing the GED exam can give you better opportunities for work in the future.
Criteria for GED Applicants
- 16-20 years of age at enrollment
- At least 1 year behind in school (not on track to graduate on time with high school class)
Prior to taking the official GED test, students will need valid, government issued ID (student ID does not work). This includes Oregon ID, driver’s license or permit, passport, or any official ID issued by other states and governments.
How to Get Started
- Meet with your current school counselor or graduation coach. If you have been out of school for more than a semester, please call the DTLC at 503-399-3421. *School staff will complete your application if GED is determined to be an appropriate educational placement*
- Schedule a reading assessment at the DTLC – we will call you once we receive your application.
- After the reading assessment, you will be referred to the proper location to get started. If you are below a 10th grade reading level, you will be referred for literacy support to target your language arts skills.
- Enroll and meet with your new counselor.
- Start classes.
