Reel Recovery Fly Tying

In-Program School is tying fishing flies for Reel Recovery a non-profit group that supports cancer victims. Reel Recovery was founded in 2003 by a group of avid fly-fishers, inspired by their fishing buddy's ongoing battle with brain cancer. Witnessing first-hand the beneficial impact fly- fishing provided their friend, they created Reel Recovery to provide the same opportunity for other men battling the disease. Combining expert fly-fishing instruction with directed "courageous conversations", the organization provides men with all forms of cancer a unique opportunity to share their stories, learn a new skill, form lasting friendships and gain renewed hope as they confront the challenges of cancer.

In-Program School's goal for the 2010-2011 school year is to tie 500 fishing flies to donate to Reel Recovery. Once completed the flies will be sent to the national headquarters and they will distribute the flies accordingly. Students have presently tied approximately 150 flies. Their time is tracked and they can earn work experience credits. In total, students as a collective group have logged in thirty-two hours to date.

Not only do students feel positive about donating to a worthy cause, they also learn a skill that can last a life time. In the past two IPS students have ended up working in specialized fly shops and have been involved in guided trips as part of their employment. Most of the individuals who fly fish that I have encountered are people of integrity who care about the environment and love the outdoors. This also gives students opportunities to meet people of this caliber and potentially form positive relationships.

Here are some student comments about their experience:

"It makes me feel good that I can help people that have cancer and support them in their challenges."

Eduardo

"Tying flies helps me feel good because I'm helping others."

Kyle

"I might fly fish some day because it seems like a fun sport to do. Also, I like helping people with cancer."

The Fisher

"Tying flies is a wonderful experience. It's fun, easy and relaxing. Also we are tying flies for people who are ill. Wow, it can't get any better."

Dan the Man

"We are tying flies for people who have illnesses and I really appreciate doing that for them. One day I would want people to do it for me."

David

"For me I really like giving back. I get credits too so it's a win for me. I like the fact that I am making things."

Who We Are

We are a fully accredited high school serving students on expulsion. Roberts High School offers a smaller learning environment, behavior support, and academic recovery.

With a smaller learning environment, Roberts High School offers the same accredited core curriculum available in each of the Salem high schools. Additionally, students are able to build relationships with staff, concentrate on choices and behavior, and become important stakeholders in the high school and their own education.
